The Waywatcher and her companion
"Nice shot, for an elf. I would've done it better myself, certainly, but I admire your enthusiasm. After all, the only good packmaster is a dead one."
"Aye, Zharrin. Not bad for an elf."
"Ugh.." Though she wore a mask covering most of her face, her indignation was clear as daylight. "Nothing but a nuisance," she mutterred, "If you can't make yourselves useful, at least keep your voice down. That goes double for you, Lumberfoots."
"Don't drag me into this Kerillian."
"I've got no quarrel with you, Kruber.. doesn't mean you don't make as much noise as a tree being split by lightning."
"Well hold on now," the iron-clad mercenary replied.
"Ha! Quarrel! You wouldn't recognise real quarrel when it hit you straight between the eyes!" Kruber just sighed, as the mage interrupted him.
"The elf's got a point, lads. Not much point in letting her take us here all stealthily when even a Rattling gunner could hear us bickering."
The four of them fell in an uneasy silence, as they made their way forward through the city.
They made the rest of their way unhindered and before long they smelled their destination, just before it came into view. Kerillian pushed the cloth closer to her face, ''That stench! Stormvermin!''
''Well that's just great, blackrats is just what we needed to lighten up the mood.'' Sienna barked her laugh, but she was quickly cut off by Kruber's hand on her shoulder. ''So how are we supposed to get in there?'' he asked. The entrance to the park was packed with rats, with Stormvermin patrolling behind them. ''That's easy enough!'' Grim determination formed on the dwarf's face as he gripped his axes' handles strapped to his back. Kerillian sighed and said ''Keep your axes strapped dwarf. We'll find another way.''
The party circled around the area, until they found a stretch of fences which seemed unguarded. ''You want me to climb over there, wutelgi?'' the dissatisfaction was unmistakeable in the dwarf's voice. The mage, similarly displeased by the thought of climbing fences in her chain filled garb, grinned and stated ''Allow me to burn a way through.''
''And this is why I call you mayflies, mayflies.'' Right after Sienna had finished burning a way through the fence, the sound of horns too familiar rang from just inside the area. ''Time to get out those axes Bardin.'' They stepped through the newly created opening, only to see hordes of rats coming out of sewers, out of the houses and straight through the surrounding enclosures, aimed right at their position. The dwarf grinned, ''What a sight! Don't they know they're doomed?'' He laughed and called out ''Time for carnage, drengbarazi!'' as he took the axes off his back.
The dwarf and the mercenary stepped forward, ready to catch the first wave of the horde. The waywatcher and the mage fell in behind them, with the elf knocking an arrow and the mage readying herself to summon flame. Right before the mass of vermin hit, Kruber uttered "Taal, give me this."
Flames flared around the party and in-between Bardin and Kruber, straight into the rat packs coming at them. Guttural shrieks filled the air, followed by the stink of burning hairs. "Bloody hell Sienna! You're scorching my undeserving ass!"
"I apologize Kruber! The flames can get greedy sometimes!" The mage stopped the flames burning through their vanguard but increased those going around their party. Immediately the waywatcher picked up the pace and shot more arrows where the fires had stopped burning. Though many rats fell before they reached them, the horde could not be stopped, and they hit the two in front with the weight of an avalanche.
The heroes were pushed back, until their backs were up against the fence again. The flames rose at their sides, funnelling the rats straight onto Kruber's halberd and the dwarf's axes. "I love watching you work, Zharrin!" the dwarf shouted back to the mage. The dwarf shouted again in glee as scores of ratmen fell before their combined onslaught.
"Ahhhh! No! Too much flame!" The mage cried out as the palms of her hand started blistering due to the enormous power flowing through them. The flames fell away abruptly as the channelling stopped. The ratmen, emboldened by the Mage's cries of pain fell on the group all at once and practically covered the dwarf under a pile of rat bodies. "Bardin, no!" The elf jumped forward, daggers drawn and pounced on the rats covering the dwarf. With the dwarf out of combat, the vermins' focus shifted towards the mercenary. He managed to shove most of them back but did not have much strength left to parry their attacks much longer. He managed to slice a score of rats with a single sweep of his halberd, as he shouted, "Don't let me die with my boots on!" At that moment Kerillian managed to free Bardin from the weight of the rats piled on top of him and shoved a potion in his mouth, "So you can get closer to the ground, dwarf? Numbers seldom best skills. Let's prove it."
The dwarf grinned maniacally and jumped up. Bloodlust whipped the dwarf into a frenzy and he was reminded of his younger days with cousin Okri, as a slayer. The strength potion given by the elf made his muscles swell and his axes feel like they lifted him, instead of the other way around. A single swipe let the slayer cleave straight through the rats and their weapons, while one blow with the other one caved in a rat's chest and tossed him straight into another pack. Kruber laughed and shouted "Taal's blood Bardin! You're unstoppable!"
The slayer's flurry of unstoppable blows broke the seemingly never-ending tides of the horde and the rest of the heroes fell in behind him, killing any that might attack the dwarf from behind. Green winds started flowing from behind the rat horde, going straight through them into the heroes' direction. ''Blightstormer!'' The elf ran back and jumped straight up the fence and climbed one of the houses next to it. ''You cannot hide. Seek!'' With those words two clear blue arrows shot from her bow, going straight forward before curving at an impossible angle. They disappeared around the corner at the end of the street. The winds carving their way through the horde to the heroes lost their sickly green color and their strength. ''The winds die with their master.''
Flames suddenly shot around the two fighting on the ground again, and with that, the ratmen were broken. Any that were left scattered in all directions, but most not getting far without an arrow in their back. ''Dead and good riddance. Nice work, mayflies.''
''Anyone need some bandages, or the filthy human equivalent thereof at least?'' Kerillian asked as she climbed down to the street. ''Alright, fine. I'll have some healing.. stuff..'' Sienna held her arms palms up. ''You've certainly looked better, mage.'' Her arms were red in their entirety and hot to the touch, several blisters pulsing at her wrists and palms. ''I've certainly looked worse as well. You worrying about me is more out of the ordinary than this.'' Sienna grinned as she looked at Kerillian bandaging her arms. The elf just shook her head and said nothing.
The group carried on forward and had just rounded the corner at the end of the street when they heard the angry guttural shouts of ratmen, followed by high shrieks of those same rats being slain. The elf darted forward, moving with a speed and agility greater than that of the other party members. She came upon an enclosure with fences higher than any of the other ones. Her curiosity got the better of her and she climbed and jumped over the fence. ''What are you doing Kerillian?'' The dwarf did not relish the thought of climbing an even higher fence. ''I'm not going to burn a hole through another fence, waywatcher!'' Kerillian was however already too far to hear them, or simply ignored them, as she went her way through the bushes.
The roar of an animal cut straight through the bushes and made Kerillian stop dead in her tracks. A fearful screech coming from a rat however made her smile and continue her way. Just a moment later she came upon a glorious sight. A sleek black cat-like animal stood upon an outcropping of rock. The beast was impressive. It was easily 2 meters long and had the color of midnight. Gods it was ferocious, with piles of corpses strewn about the enclosure. Now it seemed however, it had worked itself into a corner, with nowhere else to go to from the outcropping. Around the rock, several angry ratmen were still trying to get a hit at the cat, shouting and stabbing at it with their short spears.
In seconds, several of the vermin had fallen, as the elf's arrows sailed through the air. The remaining rats turned their attention towards the elf and came running at her. These few were however no match for a waywatcher and a moment later all were either killed or running for wherever they came from. The beast jumped off its cliff and chased after them. Kerillian sheathed her daggers and waited. Just minutes later a low growling could be heard from the bushes behind her. The large cat came prowling out the bushes, dragging a dead rat along in its jaws. The elf and the panther locked eyes.
At that moment, the mercenary, slayer and the mage came walking out of the bushes, eyeing the standoff between the elf and the big, sleek cat warily. ''Everything alright, Kerillian?''
The panther dropped its prey and came walking towards the elf. There it sat down in front of her, eyeing her expectantly. Kerillian smiled, ''I think.. we'll get along just fine.''
In the distance, the sound of a great bell could be heard ringing, followed by the howl of something big.
The mercenary smiled grimly and shouted in the direction where the howl had come from, ''Oi! We're the bloody Ubersreik four! Or five, doesn't matter.''
''Think ya can stop us? You're welcome to bloody try!''

Hoi budgetgamers!
